A Brief History
Waterloo, Austin's original name
But just barely... Waterloo was incorporated in 1839, and later that year was named the capital of The Republic of Texas, then subsequently renamed Austin after Stephen F. Austin. Even though it was only called Waterloo for a few months, this traditional name holds on and is used frequently throughout local Austin businesses, some 180+ years later.
